A Oficina is a Public Interest Cooperative whose majority shareholder is the Guimarães City Council; nevertheless, its team and management/programming services are fully independent. It manages and programs Centro Cultural Vila Flor (music, performing arts and new circus, art gallery), Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (contemporary art and José de Guimarães collection), Casa da Memória de Guimarães (territorial interpretive centre, heritage and crafts), Centro de Criação de Candoso (artistic residencies), Espaço Oficina (theatre workshops, Theatre Degree laboratories of Universidade do Minho and creation), Teatro Oficina (theatre company) and a Cultural Education and Mediation servisse (which runs through the whole programme and includes two artistic education school projects).
A TARUMBA – Teatro de Marionetas
A Turma is a production and creation company that has been working continuously in the field of performing and audiovisual arts since 2008. Its repertoire comprises works by major authors in contemporary and new drama, original texts and hybrid works that transcend the limits of the theatre, such as film productions or audiowalks. It promotes collaboration between creators from various areas of the performing arts, investing in the creation of original content. Its main pursuit is the scenic and dramaturgic exploration of language and human interactions.
For over 25 years, Alkantara has been promoting and developing projects in the performing arts field; this Lisbon-based collective plays a crucial role in the creation of an international community that does not accept any sort of physical, artistic or disciplinary boundaries.
Alkantara Festival is a biennial event that began in 2008. It brings to Lisbon a programme of shows, talks, concerts and celebrations that contributes towards reflection on the relationship between artistic practices and the issues of contemporary society. All year round, Alkantara organises a number of artistic residencies, international meetings and public presentations in Espaço Alkantara.
In 2016, Alkantara began producing Sete Anos Sete Peças, a project by choreographer Cláudia Dias that will continue until 2022. It consists of three different parts: the yearly production of a play, a publishing program and a school-oriented training project.

Ao cabo Teatro (AcT) is a production company for the performing arts. In 2001, AcT began a close collaboration with stage director/actor Nuno Cardoso which continues into the present day and has resulted in such productions as Sarah Kane’s Cleansed (2002), Mayenburg’s Parasites (2003), Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie (2009), Checkhov’s The Seagull (2010) and Three Sisters (2011), Dürrenmatt’s The Visit (2013), Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, Lars Nóren’s Demons (2014), Molière’s The Misanthrope (2016), Gorky’s Summerfolk (2017) and Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens (2018). AcT examines the classical and contemporary repertoires in search of poetic materials to feed a concept of the theatre as a machine for the interpretation of the present, and has assembled a coherent team to support its creative approach.

ASTRO FINGIDO – associação cultural
ASTRO FINGIDO, led by Ângela Marques and Fernando Moreira, works on three fronts: theatrical creation – focusing on circulation, Portuguese dramaturgy and the formation of audiences; educational service – aimed at the full development of students through Visual Arts, Dramatic Expression, Music and Philosophy for Children (P4C); community cultural project – involving the community of Lordelo-Paredes. In ten years, Astro Fingido created, among other productions: O Grito dos Pavões and A Torre dos Alcoforados (Romanesque Route), Mulheres- Móveis and A Rua Esquecida (Rede Artéria); it also runs a P4C workshop (Filosofário – Oficina do Pensar Crítico e Criativo) for the Porto Municipality, and manages Amateur Theatre for the Paredes Municipality.
The People of Today are on our sights: we wish to surprise them with a multidisciplinary project that can fulfil new needs and demands, bringing citizens to the theatre and turning a mere aggregation of houses into a space that can be experienced in more human terms.
Pursuing a work that is receptive to the various artistic trends, we do our best to adopt the new technologies and, by tracing a path that builds bridges into the city, reach parts of the population that are unfamiliar with the theatre, thus creating room for the kind of eminently playful creations that may coexist and engage with emerging theatrical expressions, because we believe that a city’s diversity of cultural offerings is also a sign of cosmopolitanism.
BALLETEATRO CONTEMPORÂNEO DO PORTO, CRL
Ever since its foundation, Balleteatro has been a hub for the development of the performing arts. Established in 1983, it played an important role in the development of an artistic community for contemporary performing arts in Porto. It possesses an important repertoire of choreographic creations by resident artists Isabel Barros and Né Barros; through a number of collaborations with other artists, these creations combine a variety of languages, like the visual arts, photography, music, film and puppetry. Besides its creative work, Balleteatro pioneered the democratisation of the arts via its training courses. In 1989, it opened the first Professional School for dance and theatre in Portugal. Since 2005, the company resides in the iconic Coliseu do Porto.

Circolando has been working since 1999, under the artistic direction of André Braga and Cláudia Figueiredo. Besides the creation and divulgation of André Braga and Cláudia Figueiredo’s projects, its main activity, Circolando also supports the realisation of projects by its associated artists, while operating and creation centre at CACE Cultural do Porto; for all these reasons, Circolando is described as a Space for Transdisciplinary Creation.
The concept of transdisciplinarity lies at the core of this artistic project: an intense dialogue between dance and theatre, with strong contributions from other artistic fields: poetry, visual arts, music, video.
Circolando works regularly with some of the most celebrated cultural structures in Portugal; its work has been presented in various festivals and theatres across the world.

The company’s artistic program combines an ever-renewed interest in new dramaturgy with experimentation, via its theatrical creations, with Humanity’s great dramaturgic legacy: the classics. CTB develops and furthers its artistic undertaking in the areas of stage creation, media arts and audience education. In all these areas, it develops partnership, exchange and co- production projects with various Portuguese and foreign groups and individuals. Being a repertoire company, CTB presents eight to nine productions per year.

Dançando com a Diferença was founded in 2001 on the island of Madeira, as a wide-ranging educational and social project aimed at bringing Inclusive Dance to the region. This dance company, under the artistic direction of Henrique Amoedo, has become an important reference in the European artistic scene in terms of inclusion through the arts. Currently, it has a branch in Viseu. The company’s repertoire includes works by various choreographers, such as Henrique Rodovalho, Paulo Ribeiro, Rui Horta, Clara Andermatt, Rui Lopes Graça, Tânia Carvalho and La Ribot.

For over twenty years, EGEAC has been promoting, preserving and organising Lisbon’s cultural events, through its street activities and management of such facilities as the São Luiz and LU.CA theatres, a number of museums and art galleries, and landmarks like the Monument to the Discoveries and the São Jorge Castle. An entity with a wide-ranging involvement in the city, EGEAC organises a programming that is multidisciplinary, encompassing, inclusive and democratic, while aiming at being an active and receptive operator that works in both the contemporary sphere and the more popular fields.
Its goal and mission is to be the leading name in terms of cultural creation and divulgation in the city of Lisbon, a reference as concerns the management of cultural spaces and events, an agent of heritage valorisation, and the activator of an artistic and cultural network. EGEAC intends to create a unique, distinctive cultural personality for Lisbon, stimulating artistic creation and divulgation, supporting major cultural projects and facilitating the communication between the city and its local, national and international audiences.

Established in 1996 by actors Emília Silvestre and Jorge Pinto, ENSEMBLE is an artistic
creation, experimentation and training project. Over the years, it has presented shows
based on the work of classic writers such as Molière, Shakespeare, Chekhov or Ibsen, and
contemporaries like Brian Friel, Samuel Beckett, Arnold Wesker, Tom Kempinski or Jean
Cocteau, as well as commissioned and staged original texts by modern Portuguese
playwrights Luísa Costa Gomes, Jacinto Lucas Pires, Mickael de Oliveira and Ricardo
Alves, in productions that involved scores of actors, dancers and musicians, stage
directors and choreographers, light, sound, video, set and costume designers from all over
the country. The exacting quality standards of this unique artistic project are reflected on
their ambitious, and often daring, creations, which have always been welcomed
enthusiastically by the public.

Companhia Erva Daninha appeared in 2006; its work is focused on the search for new ways to create and perform circus numbers, attempting to turn virtuosity into a means for the communication of ideas. The company’s main concern is artistic creation. Its repertoire includes several shows for the stage, public spaces and alternative venues. Besides this, Erva Daninha’s work also includes training and programming in the area of Contemporary Circus (Festival TRENGO). Since 2015, it is a resident company at Teatro Campo Alegre, as a part of the Teatro em Campo Aberto initiative (Teatro Municipal do Porto / Porto City Council). Companhia Erva Daninha has the continued support of República Portuguesa – Cultura / Direção Geral das Artes.

FIMP (Porto International Puppet Festival) has been busy divulging and promoting contemporary puppetry, theatre and animated objects and forms since 1989.
The festival presents itself as a space for reflection and criticism on the possibilities of this theatrical form, which also takes into itself the various expressive forms it comes across.
A continual relationship with various art schools speaks of the festival’s commitment to enriching the professional and artistic fabric of both Porto and the country at large, namely by regularly providing the community with formative spaces.
FIMP is also the result of an equation that expresses itself in the diversity of its partnerships, which provide the context for the implementation of an artistic project directed at an audience that is specialised and all-inclusive at once.

A building designed by architect Rem Koolhaas and opened in 2005, Casa da Música stands out of its surrounding urban context and has carved a niche of its own as an innovative artistic institution. Besides housing five musical groups – a symphony orchestra, a contemporary music ensemble, a baroque orchestra, a choir and a children’s choir –, it also plays an active part in supporting contemporary creation, via regular commissions of new works from composers. Its programming cycles feature major international names as well as emerging talents, covering all phases in music history and showcasing many musical styles. Casa da Música also has an Educational Service that offers a wide variety of musical experiences to its visitors.

The Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB), an architectural project by Vittorio Gregotti (Italy) and Manuel Salgado (Portugal), is run by a Foundation dedicated to the promotion of culture, particularly Portuguese culture, in its many artistic manifestations.
Located in the western part of Lisbon, by the river Tagus, the CCB was inaugurated in 1993, after hosting the European Union Presidency.
The CCB consists of various buildings, separated by streets, squares and bridges; the whole is a living space in which people work, stroll around and enjoy the creative capabilities of the greatest artists of all time.
In this space, where contemporary forms of expression are highlighted, visitors are offered shows of music and singing, dance and theatre, art exhibitions and a multiplicity of activities dedicated to various audiences and ages.

NAPALM_ctdca arose from the desire to create an artistic structure that would facilitate a consistent, continuous exploration of the performing arts. We are, intuitively and creatively, a company that works on Theatre and Dance within the context of contemporary art, looking for the future without renouncing the past. Our work is not to be passively enjoyed: our audience must be constantly alert. In our shows, the poetics of the text is diluted through a variety of dramaturgic treatments. Cross-pollination with other contemporary forms enhances the multidisciplinary approach of the company, marked by constant research. We wish to assert ourselves through our way of looking at the world, showing it through our eyes to all who wish to look through them.
Founded in the year 2000, Nome Próprio produces contemporary dance and theatre shows. Choreographer and stage director Victor Hugo Pontes – its founder and artistic director – often works on the border area between different artistic languages, making eclectic use of such forms as classical or experimental music, visual arts or literature. Some of his productions are Manual de Instruções, A Ballet Story (2012’s Best Dance Show, according to the Público and Expresso newspapers), Zoo, Coppia, Se Alguma Vez Precisares da Minha Vida, Vem e Toma-a, Nocturno and Margem. Over the years, a Nome Próprio has developed projects, shown in Portugal and abroad, in collaboration with various institutions, such as: TNSJ, Teatro Municipal do Porto, CCVF, Gulbenkian, CCB, Teatro Maria Matos, São Luiz Teatro Municipal, Festival Panorama (Brazil), Festival de Dance de Cannes, Théâtre de Liège and Festival Paris l’Été, among others.

OPART’s aim is providing public service in the areas of classical music and dance, through Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (TNSC) and Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB). The TNSC opened its doors in 1793 and remains today the only Portuguese theatre dedicated to the production and presentation of opera and choral/symphonic music shows. Its resident musical groups are Coro do TNSC (1943) and Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa (1993). As for CNB (1977), based at Teatro Camões, it presents important works from the international repertoire, from classical evergreens to pieces by choreographers like Balanchine, De Keersmaeker, Forsythe, Joos, Kylián, Limon, Van Manen or Spöerli. Concurrently, CNB has, for the past forty years, created a very personal identity for itself by making several commissions, largely from Portuguese authors like Armando Jorge, Fernando Duarte, Olga Roriz, Rui Lopes Graça or Vasco Wellenkamp.

The Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras (OCCO), which was founded in 2000, is supported by the City Councils of Cascais and Oeiras and by DGArtes. Considered one of the best Portuguese orchestras, it plays a fundamental role in the cultural life of the abovementioned municipalities. OCCO has played in most Portuguese classical music festivals, and also in other European countries, such as Germany, Bulgaria, Spain and Italy, namely in several General Assemblies of European Festivals. Major Portuguese and foreign soloists have played with OCCO. In 2012, OCCO was awarded the Cascais City Council’s Medal of Cultural Merit gave for its contributions to culture and art.

This firm’s main objective is to participate in the creation and production of artistic projects in such areas as the performing arts, visual arts, literature or multimedia. It also intends to enrich the artistic scene by implementing and/or supporting various projects, creating and educating new audiences, and developing new approaches to the creation of artistic objects.

The Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV) is a part of the University of Coimbra. Since its opening in 1961, its cultural, artistic and educational mission has always been fulfilled between the City and the University. A public service venue, the TAGV offers a regular and varied programming, thus connecting Coimbra to various theatre, dance, music and film networks in Portugal and abroad.
Its projects, which stretch across time and have their own programmatic lines, which makes
them unique in the Portuguese artistic scene, include: Centro de Dramaturgia Contemporânea; Encontro de Novas Dramaturgias (Festival END); Abril Dança em Coimbra, Mostra de Teatro Universitário; and École des Maîtres, an international project of advanced training.
Founded in 1981, Teatro Art’Imagem has a body of work spanning more than 37 years, including over a hundred productions and the annual hosting of two International Theatre Festivals. The company’s headquarters are in Porto, where part of its documentation centre and archives can be found. Since 2008, thanks to an agreement with the Maia City Council, its creation and production unit, which includes an auditorium, an exhibition room, a library and an office, has been located at Quinta da Caverneira, in Águas Santas. Teatro Art’Imagem’s mission develops across six main fronts: Creation, Quinta da Caverneira Programming, Festivals, National/International Touring and Audience Education via Theatre Workshops and Community Events.

Teatro da Didascália was founded in 2008, in Joane, Vila Nova de Famalicão. Mostly focused on creative work in the performing arts field, it combines research and artistic cross-pollination to achieve a personal, innovative expression.
Besides creating shows, Teatro da Didascália also develops three projects of cultural programming: the Vaudeville Rendez-Vous international festival and the Territórios Dramáticos theatrical meeting, both intent on changing our use of public and private spaces by turning them into places where the arts interact with the territory and its communities; and Espaço FAUNA, a new creative project with regular programming that was created in 2018 at Quinta da Bemposta, in Joane.

Teatro da Garagem is a theatre company, founded in 1989, whose artistic work consists in exploring new forms of writing for the stage, as well as the new scenic forms that develop alongside them.
The company includes a resident author/stage director, a musician, a group of actors, a production team, a light designer and a stage/costume designer. Besides presenting its stage productions of texts by Carlos J. Pessoa, the company also works with the local community through the activities devised by its Educational Service and divulges the work of new authors via its Try Better, Fail Better cycle.
Since 2005, Teatro da Garagem resides at Teatro Taborda, by invitation of EGEAC/Lisbon City Council.

In the very heart of Bairro Alto, at 63, Luz Soriano Street, Teatro do Bairro occupies the space that for decades housed the rotary press of newspaper Diário Popular, right next door to the National Conservatory’s Music School. Located in a historically privileged hotspot of artistic experiences, it acts as a platform for various contemporary performing arts, with a diversified programming that invites the circulation of different artists and audiences. Besides its own productions, it also hosts outside shows, in the areas of theatre, music, film and dance. This interdisciplinary programming, which includes several in-house creations, allows for a number of welcome exchanges and cross-pollinations, whereby all participants are enriched. Teatro do Bairro is a place where citizens come into contact with the various arts and their creators.

Teatro do Bolhão was founded in 2003 by a group of 15 professionals with important careers in various areas of theatrical creation and production, as well as a wide artistic and ethical common ground, defined during their work at ACE Escola de Artes. The company pursues an eclectic creation model, that includes the rereading of classic drama, the divulgation of new authors and the pluridisciplinary work of Joana Providência. Housed since 2015 in Palácio do Bolhão, a classified historic building that holds its two auditoriums, Teatro do Bolhão is a space for creation, programming and autonomous, differentiated hosting. Also of note is the work of its Educational Service, which serves children, school groups and informal visitors.

Founded by Daniel Gorjão, Teresa Tavares and Sara Garrinhas, Teatro do Vão emerged out of a desire, shared by creators in many different artistic forms, to create a human and physical space for research, experimentation and freedom. Its main objective is the fostering of culture and creativity, viewed as means for the development of humans and their societies, as well as promoting artistic research and experimentation, thus raising public awareness of contemporary art.
The creation, organisation and promotion of multidisciplinary artistic objects that combine such disciplines as theatre, dance and the visual arts will facilitate dialogue, reflection and the diffusion of new forms of expression in Portugal and abroad.

Teatro dos Aloés was founded in 2000 by a group of actors who had previously shared a number of projects and experiences. The company was named after A Lesson From Aloes, a magnificent text by South African writer Athol Fugard that talks to us of friendship, mutual trust, the struggle for ideals, the beauty in poetry and art that makes men superior and happy beings, the power of ideas, the belief in the progress of humanity and the tranquil wisdom that comes from believing in such goals. A Lesson From Aloes shows us how to withstand adverse conditions, overcoming fear, suspicion and intrigue, when the utopia we wish to realise stands perfectly clear before our eyes.

This company, founded in 2002, largely focuses on puppet theatre. While exploring a not always stable symbiosis of symbolic language, traditional legacy and contemporary thought, we use puppets as tools in our search for artistic identity. Our aim is to develop the visual, scenic and dramatic potential of the puppet, but in itself and in its connection with the human performer. In this process, we try to discover and explore a dramaturgy that represents us. Creative partnerships, inclusive and socially important community work and decentralisation are all major concerns in our everyday activity.

Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE) is an organic element of Instituto Politécnico do Porto; ESMAE provides training in the areas of Dance, Music and Theatre.
ESMAE hosts Teatro Helena Sá e Costa (THSC), whose mission is to divulge and promote the Arts, enhancing the individual process of learning and development, experimenting with new forms and providing support to budding artistic projects, both within the institution and outside it.
Presently, THSC focuses on presenting new creations and on the hosting of internal and external productions in the performing arts field.
Founded in Lisbon (1992), Teatro Meridional is a travelling company whose productions are focused on the actor’s performance, turning the construction of each scenic object into a work of research and experimentation. It joined Performart in 2017.
The main lines of its artistic activity include the staging of original texts, the creation of new dramaturgies based on adaptations of non-theatrical texts, the staging and adaptation of major dramatic texts, and the creation of shows in which the word is not the main form of on-stage communication.
So far, Teatro Meridional has been the recipient of 44 awards, most importantly the Europe Prize Theatrical Realities, in 2010.
Teatro Nacional D. Maria II

Lisbon’s Teatro Nacional D. Maria II (TNDM II) opened its doors in 1846, during the commemorations of Queen Maria II’s 27th birthday. In 1964, it was completely destroyed in a fire, but would reopen fourteen years later, after a complete reconstruction that preserved the building’s original neoclassical style. It stands in Rossio’s D. Pedro IV Square, and in 2012 it was reclassified as a national monument.
Under the Artistic Direction of Tiago Rodrigues since 2015, the TNDM II works with the intent to open itself to the community, attracting and developing new audiences and bringing cultural and artistic activities to all strata of the society.

Founded in the 1990s, the Teatro Nacional São João (TNSJ) has sought, under the direction of Ricardo Pais, to pursue an organic approach to its mission, focused on developing a unique artistic project, assembling optimal conditions for theatrical creation, an engaged partnership with the Portuguese and European theatrical universes and a particular emphasis on the communicability of its shows. A member of the Union des Théâtres de l’Europe since 2003, the TNSJ also comprises Teatro Carlos Alberto, an important platform for collaborations with Porto theatrical companies and for many Portuguese contemporary stage creations, and the São Bento da Vitória Monastery, a 17th-century monument that hosts theatrical performances and other events in the TNSJ’s programming.
Teatro O Bando
Teatro O Bando
Founded in 1974, Teatro O Bando is one of Portugal’s oldest cultural cooperatives, a collective that has chosen aesthetic transfiguration as its means of operating on a civic and community level. Its roots can be found in street theatre and children’s entertainment. Teatro O Bando’s creations are largely defined by their visual impact, careful staging and a dramaturgical work that generally adapts texts by Portuguese-speaking authors that were not originally written for the stage. Teatro O Bando continues to strive for uniqueness in its productions, in order to create more powerful and unexpected works of art. The company’s latest home base is a farmhouse in Vale dos Barris, Palmela.
Teatro Pé de Vento

Pé de Vento began its work as a professional theatre company in Porto, in February 1978. In February of that same year, having received its first regular annual subsidy, it began its long career, largely dedicated to audiences consisting of children and young people. Since its foundation, the company’s artistic direction has been handled by a group consisting of stage director João Luiz, dramaturgist Maria João Reynaud and writer Manuel António Pina, whose work has been featured in many of the Pé de Vento’s shows until the present day.
In October 1996, the company opened to the public Teatro da Vilarinha, a 106-seat venue equipped with a catwalk and other necessary technical implements.
Pé de Vento became a Public Utility in 2013. In 2003, on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the company was awarded the Porto City Council’s Medal of Merit – Silver Degree.
Teatro Viriato – CAEV
TEATRO VIRIATO – CAEV
Teatro Viriato is a cultural structure for the programming and production of performing arts, run by Centro de Artes do Espetáculo de Viseu, Associação Cultural e Pedagógica and directed by Paula Garcia. Since 1999, it also hosts Companhia Paulo Ribeiro. An object lesson in cultural decentralisation, its programming features many Portuguese and foreign shows of music, theatre, dance and new circus, as well as various educational activities, operating within various local, national and international networks. Teatro Viriato supports Portuguese artists via co-productions and residency support, while also helping professional artists who wish to reside in Viseu. Since 1998, it enjoys the financial support of the Viseu Municipality and the Portuguese Government.
